I was certainly not born a genius. In fact, far from it! In my early primary schooldays at St Stephen’s School, my parents were frustrated that I could not remember multiplication tables or Chinese words after ten minutes of learning them. I was a lazy, unmotivated underachiever. I daydreamed in class, drew cartoons during Chinese lessons and failed most of my tests. As a result, I was labeled ‘attention deficit’ and a ‘slow learner’. After getting into lots of trouble, I was finally expelled from school at the age of 9. Even after my mum got me into another school, after much pleading, I continued to neglect my studies. At my Primary School Leaving Exams, I performed so badly that I was rejected from all six secondary schools that they had chosen for me. In the end, I was posted to a relatively new neighbourhood school that no one had ever heard of. It was one of the bottom ranked schools in Singapore at the time. Although I had very caring and committed teachers (and a dynamic Principal), I gravitated towards like-minded, equally playful and indifferent-to-studies schoolmates. In my secondary 1 class, it was certainly NOT the norm for anyone to dare to dream that they could go onto Junior College, let alone a University. Most of my classmates aimed just to pass the exams and hopefully gain entry into a polytechnic. This further reinforced my negative attitude and self-belief that I didn’t have the intelligence and diligence to succeed and learning was just too difficult. As a result, I continued failing my tests and ended up being ranked 156th in my cohort (out of about 160+ students). Then My Life Changed... My life began to change when my Dad (in sheer desperation), started sending me for motivational programs for teens and got me interested in reading books on motivation, success and learning. It was through these programs that I first became exposed to the concept that all students have the potential to succeed, given the right mindsets and the right learning strategies. I felt like I had been zapped by a magic wand…suddenly I realized that I had been given - through these books and courses – the key to becoming whatever I set my mind to. During my JC days, I would spend my school holidays and after school time as a volunteer teaching primary and secondary school students how they too could achieve top grades in school even, if they have been performing poorly before. By using myself as a role model (from neighbourhood school to top JC), I was able to empower and inspire hundreds of other underachievers to excel. That was when I discovered my true passion and calling in life. After scoring straight ‘A’s for my ‘A’ Level Exams, I achieved my 3rd goal of entering NUS Business School. After applying all the powerful learning skills once again, I was ranked among the top 1% of academic achievers in NUS and was one of the pioneer students in the NUS Talent Development Program, which is like the Gifted program there. I finished my 4-year honors degree in 3 years and was placed on the Deans List for all 3 consecutive years.
I then started the Superkids program for children ages 7 to 12 and the I Am Gifted, So Are You! program for teenagers and collectively these two programs train over 12,800 students in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia annually.
So, no matter how badly your child may be doing in school, his potential for improvement is phenomenal! Never lose faith.
